Blue Parakeet Rugs Get the Nod in Sunset's Guide to Decorating with Neutrals

We were so excited to see Sunset magazine spotlight something we've always believed in—that a vintage rug is one of the best ways to bring warmth, soul, and personality to a neutral space. And right there at the top of the piece is a gorgeous Kazak rug in a Newport Beach home designed by KADI Design. Kim Doherty, the incredible designer behind KADI, generously drove over an hour to come see the rugs in person and pick out that gem herself—that's the kind of dedication to getting it right that we love!
In their guide on how to move beyond "sad beige" and make neutral rooms feel more personal and layered, Kim put it perfectly—a vintage rug is the way to warm up a beige room and bring in color without overwhelming a soothing palette. We couldn't agree more. It's what we see every day with our clients: an antique or vintage rug becomes the anchor, the thing that gives a neutral room its story and its spark.
The whole piece is full of great advice from West Coast designers on layering textures, mixing old and new, and making a space feel collected rather than catalog-perfect. And vintage is a thread running through all of it—from hand-troweled plaster walls to old ceramic pots to one-of-a-kind consoles. It's the kind of design philosophy that feels very aligned with what we do at Blue Parakeet Rugs. Our handwoven antique rugs have always been about adding that layer of history and character that new pieces just can't replicate.
