Emily, Rugs, and One of My Favorite Design Friendships

I’ve been smiling ever since Emily Henderson shared her newest post about falling back in love with antique Persian rugs.

Truthfully, it made me think about how long we’ve been doing this together.

Emily was one of the very first nationally recognized designers I ever had the chance to work with, back when Blue Parakeet Rugs was still finding its footing. Over the years I’ve watched her move from house to house, project to project, while one thing has stayed remarkably consistent, her appreciation for old rugs with character.

What I’ve always admired about Emily is that she doesn’t choose a rug simply because it’s beautiful. She waits for the one that feels right. Sometimes that means borrowing one to live with for a few days. Sometimes it means passing on dozens before finding “the one.” I love that approach because it’s exactly how I believe rugs should be chosen.

One of my favorite memories is loading rugs into my truck, rolling up to her house, and unrolling one after another across the grass in front of her home. Those are the moments that remind me this business has never really been about selling rugs. It’s about helping people find something they’ll want to live with for years.

Reading Emily’s latest article also made me smile because she described exactly what so many of my clients discover. A great antique rug brings warmth, history, and personality to a room in a way very few new rugs can. The colors soften with age, the wool develops a beautiful patina, and every piece carries its own story.

I’m incredibly grateful that over the years Emily has trusted my eye and my collection enough to feature Blue Parakeet Rugs time and time again. I don’t take that for granted. Her readers have become some of my favorite clients, and many have become friends.

If Emily’s article has you thinking that it might finally be time for an antique rug of your own, I’ve put together a collection of my favorite large vintage rugs that are perfect for living rooms, dining rooms, and family spaces.

Or, if you’re like me and love seeing what’s just come through the door, take a look at my recent arrivals. New rugs are added regularly, and once they’re gone, they’re truly one of a kind.

If you enjoy seeing antique rugs in real homes, along with designer collaborations, magazine features, and behind-the-scenes stories from Blue Parakeet Rugs, I think you’ll also enjoy browsing my Rug Buzz journal. It’s where I share the journey of these old rugs long after they leave my warehouse and become part of someone’s home.

Thank you, Emily, for continuing to champion old rugs and the stories they carry. It’s been such a joy watching your homes evolve over the years, and I’m honored that Blue Parakeet Rugs has been a small part of that journey.

And to everyone visiting from Emily’s blog… welcome. I’m so happy you’re here. I hope you find a rug that feels like it was meant to be yours.
