Everything You Should Know About Antique Persian Heriz Rugs
There are rugs you admire...and then there are Heriz rugs. The kind you stop in front of. The kind that make a room feel like it has a spine. They are rugged, they are cool, they are tribal and they hold up all things life. Antique Persian Heriz rugs are the ones I collect the MOST.
Antique Persian Heriz rugs come from a small village called Heriz, tucked into the northwest corner of Iran near the legendary rug city of Tabriz. And the rugs they've been producing there since the 19th century are unlike anything else in the Persian rug world. Bold. Geometric. Built to last forever. Per usual, I have lots to say, let’s dive in.
The Heriz “Look”
If you've ever seen a Heriz rug you know it immediately. Bold central medallion or strong all over design, and pretty much always geometric and/or angular floral elements that feel more architectural than decorative.
Heriz rugs don't do soft or subtle. They do confident. They’re powerful. The lines are strong, the medallion commands the room, and the whole composition has a grounded, almost structural quality that makes them work beautifully in mid century modern interiors , traditional ones and there to ground new builds with its old.
The Colors
Deep reds...rich indigos...warm earthy greens and golds set against ivory. That's the Heriz palette. And then sometimes, you get deeply intense and irresistible French blue and some other beautiful vegetable dyed colors that just keep you in awe. The natural dyes used in antique Heriz rugs age the way all good vegetable dyes do, mellowing and deepening over time rather than fading into nothing. The colors you see in a 100-year-old Heriz are colors that have earned their richness.
There's also something fascinating about the wool itself. The Heriz region sits near Mount Sabalan, and the local water carries traces of copper from the mineral deposits there. That copper works its way into the wool fiber and contributes to the extraordinary durability these rugs are known for. It's not magic...it's geology. And it's why a well-made Heriz can handle heavy foot traffic for generations without losing its character.
The Durability
Antique Heriz rugs are among the most hardworking rugs in the Persian canon. Dense pile, robust construction, copper-enriched wool...they were built for real life in a way that many finer Persian rugs simply weren't. If you have kids, dogs, a busy household, a Heriz can take it. And it will only look better for having done so. And yes, that includes even the worn ones.

Heriz in Your Home
This is a rug that works everywhere. Grand living room, formal dining room, a library, a hallway, the entry or bath. The geometric boldness means it pairs beautifully with clean-lined modern furniture and equally well with collected, layered interiors. It doesn't blend in...it anchors. And sometimes that's exactly what a room needs.
